Satellites Appear Doomed After Pegasus Xl Mishap

WASHINGTON Two small science satellites were rendered useless after failing to separate from a Pegasus XL launcher once the air-launched booster had delivered them to their correct orbit. Officials at NASA and Orbital Sciences Corp. said the latest mishap involving the troubled booster appeared to be caused by a malfunction with the third stage’s transient power bus, a unit that was supposed to supply a charge to pyrotechnics to jettison the payloads.

Snecma to Buy Sep in Non-merger Pact

PARIS In an about-face, France’s Snecma is preparing to acquire Societe Europeenne de Propulsion (SEP), abandoning its plan to sell its stake in noncore affiliates and subsidiaries such as SEP, Messier-Bugatti and Hispano-Suiza. State-owned Snecma is expected to invest $203.8 million to buy SEP shares currently owned by private investors.
