WASHINGTON U.S. Air Force Space Command is proposing to field a small inventory of special-purpose Minuteman IIIs while starting development of a long-term replacement of the intercontinental ballistic missile force. Although still only a concept, the so-called Minuteman III Elite initiative would take some of the 500 Minuteman IIIs in USAF inventory and tweak them for enhanced capabilities, said an Air Force official who asked not to be named.
