WASHINGTON High financing costs and the need to reduce its government debt have driven Jordan to “postpone indefinitely” an $875-million order for eight Panavia Tornado interdiction-strike fighters. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was advised of Jordan’s decision in a Mar. 13 visit by King Hussein to London.

CAPE CANAVERAL The Delta Star sensor spacecraft now in orbit is designed to generate new rocket and missile plume data by observing as many as 24 launches during the next six months. Scientists need this information to design space defense targeting and tracking systems.

Soviets Lose Contact with Phobos 2 Spacecraft

PARIS/WASHINGTON Loss of communications with the Soviet Union’s Phobos 2 spacecraft may have prematurely ended the country’s ambitious Mars mission that was to have included a close encounter with the Martian moon Phobos. The communications problem on Mar. 27 forced a cancellation of the planned Apr. 9-10 encounter with Phobos, and the inability of controllers to reestablish contact by late last week raised the probability that control links with Phobos 2 would not be restored.
