Co.’s T76 turboprop engine designed to the most recent Navy specifications for the light counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft is a higher-powered version of the Model 331, rated at 660 shp. for 30 min. with a maximum continuous output of 550 shp., resulting from increased turbine efficiency.

Western Will Focus on 720b, Twin-jets

New York—Western Air Lines plans to concentrate ultimately on two types of aircraft, the Boeing 720B and the Lockheed Electra until the Electra’s probable replacement by a BAC 111 or DC-9 class twin-engine transport. Costs of introducing a new type of aircraft into a fleet eliminated Western’s interest in the Boeing 727.

Large-scale Coin Buy Remains in Doubt

Washington—White House and the Pentagon will take a second look at the counter-insurgency aircraft program before going into large-scale production of the COIN aircraft. Despite President Johnson’s Aug. 15 announcement that North American Aviation won the Navy’s competition for the COIN aircraft, there will be continuing pressures on behalf of other COIN aircraft proposals either in existence or under development.

Soviets Planning Extensive Iqsy Effort

United Nations, N. Y.—Soviet Union plans an extensive program of space exploration for the International Years of the Quiet Sun (IQSY), now under way. In a report to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the USSR indicated that it plans to launch several sounding rockets, satellites and interplanetary probes, including interplanetary research vehicles similar to the Mars 1 vehicle (AW July 13, p. 24).
