Long Beach, Calif.—Douglas Aircraft Co. unveiled its first DC-9 twin-jet, short-haul transport last week, 10 months after assembly began here, and is readying the aircraft to meet a Feb. 27 first flight date, which is two weeks ahead of the original Mar. 15 target established two years ago.

Stockholm—Substantial profit reported by Scandinavian Airlines System for Fiscal 1964 reflects the efforts of a tough management which is resisting all temptations to over-expand because of current prosperity. The present SAS management group, headed by president Karl Nilsson, took over operation of the company in 1962 when the airline was facing severe criticism because of a series of heavy deficits that began with the introduction of jet transports (AW&ST May 21, 1962, p. 47).

Stratocruiser to Drop Israeli Paratroops

Geneva—Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd., has completed the conversion of a civilian Boeing 377 Stratocruiser transport into a paratroop carrier at its Lod Airport facilities near Tel Aviv. The aircraft, one of five Stratocruisers purchased from Pan American World Airways in 1962, underwent extensive modifications—all designed and executed by IAI—including the installation of twin aft jump doors, rear-loading cargo doors and an additional door forward.
