Atmosphere Data to Alter Voyager Design
Los Angeles—Refinement of critical Mars atmospheric data from the NASA Mariner 4 flight has established a new base for design parameters for the Voyager entry capsule and the method of approach and landing on the Martian surface. At the present point in the Mariner 4 data analysis by engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA’s technical manager for the Voyager program, the quick-look appraisal of a 10to 20-mb. atmospheric pressure following the Mars occultation experiment conducted last July (AW&ST Aug. 2, p. 55) has been revised to a general 5to 8-mb. range.
