Aerospace Lagging on Campuses

Cambridge, Mass.—Steep decline in undergraduate aerospace engineering enrollments caused by the industry depression of the early 1970s has resulted in the abolition or merger of aerospace departments at a number of U. S. universities, and those that remain independent are scrambling to find students.

Bomb Tests in Ionian Sea Crash Detailed

Performance: A comparative study was made of Flight 841’s pitchup as described by the witnesses aboard Pan Am 110 and the performance capability and flight control characteristics of the Boeing 707. The study was based on an aircraft gross weight of 200,000 lb., a cg. at 27.5% MAC and an initial cruise at Mach 0.82 at 28,000 ft. pressure altitude.

Future of Paris Air Show Flying Displays Clouded By Stiff Restrictions, Nationalism

Paris—High-performance aircraft flying at the Paris air show is facing a tenuous future after an eruption of French self-interest compounded a restricted operating envelope for safety and noise reasons. One incident when the USAF/General Dynamics F-16 fighter was ordered to halt its demonstration and land and another restricting the acrobatic performance of Rockwell International test pilot Robert Hoover directly involved Serge Dassault, son of the founder of the Dassault aerospace group and head of Electronique Marcel Dassault.

Tighter Foreign Sales Controls Studied

Washington—Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee is asking the Defense Dept. to examine the possibility of more rigorous controls on foreign military sales to prevent a recurrence of the situation where Northrop Corp. allegedly paid bribes of $450,000 to two Saudi Arabian air force generals to influence that nation’s purchase of F-5 aircraft support.
