Budget Cuts to Slow Growth of Japan’s Aerospace Industry

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN The Japanese aerospace industry achieved sales of 1 trillion yen ($7.35 billion) for the first time in 1989, but government cutbacks in defense and space spending threaten to slow the pace of future growth. Terminations of critical military aircraft and missile licensed-manufacturing programs could hurt the industry as follow-on production of the indigenous FSX fighter is delayed.
