Russia Exploring Solar Sail Applications; Prototype Test Scheduled This Fall

KALININGRAD, RUSSIA Russia will test a prototype solar sail this year as the first step in an ambitious program aimed at using such sails for spacecraft propulsion and other applications. The prototype sail will be carried by a Progress cargo spacecraft scheduled for launch to the Mir 1 station in late October or early November.

F-117 Crashes After Pilot Ejects Following Takeoff From Holloman

LOS ANGELES An Air Force F-117 attack aircraft crashed Aug. 4 in a sparsely populated area shortly after a nighttime takeoff from Holloman AFB, N. M. The accident was the fourth involving an F-117, and the first since the stealth aircraft was publicly unveiled at Nellis AFB, Nev., in April, 1990, according to Air Force officials.

Esa Rescues Eureca From Low Orbit, Tests Payloads for 9-month Flight

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER The European Space Agency’s Eureca shuttle-deployed spacecraft was boosted from the low orbit following an aborted boost maneuver. Late last week, controllers at the European Space Operations Center (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, had executed a 29-min. burn to boost Eureca into a 507 × 473 km. orbit and were preparing to circularize the orbit.
